K2Share Security Team Members Win 1st and 2nd Runner-up DHS/FEMA ISSO of the Year Awards

08 October 2008

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – K2Share Security Team Information Systems Security Officers (ISSO) Kent Knudsen and Karen Urban were recently awarded 1st and 2nd Runner-Up, respectively, for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) ISSO of the Year, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Component. They were presented with their awards by FEMA CIO Jeanne Etzel during the kick-off activities for the 2008 DHS Security Conference and Workshop held in Baltimore, MD, August 25th -28th. Mr. Knudsen and Ms. Urban were both nominated by Elisa Cruz, FEMA’s IT Security Branch Chief.

“Winning this award means a great deal,” said Kent Knudsen, K2Share’s Information Systems Security Manager. “The Security Team’s goal is to meet and anticipate our clients’ security needs, so they can run their business instead of being concerned about the safety of their critical data. It’s very gratifying to know that they feel we’ve accomplished that and more.”

The ISSO of the Year program was created in 2004 by DHS Chief Information Security Officer Bob West to recognize outstanding security professionals from each DHS Component and an overall top ISSO. The program recognizes the ISSOs whose efforts and contributions are acknowledged as being notable and distinguished. The ISSO of the Year is required to consistently perform well beyond normal job requirements and have demonstrated loyalty, outstanding performance, commitment, dedication, and innovation in implementing IT security throughout their Component. Component-level winners receive a Runner-Up Award, and the overall ISSO winner receives the Eagle Award. Nominees include both federal contractors and employees that work for DHS Components. DHS Components include: the Directorate for National Protection and Programs, the Directorate for Science and Technology, the Directorate for Management, the Office of Policy, the Office of Health Affairs, the Office of Intelligence and Analysis, the Office of Operations Coordination, the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center, the Domestic Nuclear Detection Office, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), the United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP), the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services, the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the United States Coast Guard, FEMA, and the United States Secret Service. For the 56 systems of the FEMA Component, of which Mr. Knudsen and Ms. Urban are a part, there are approximately 140 ISSOs.

“Information Systems Security Officers play a key role in maintaining the security of DHS information systems. It is such a great honor to be nominated for and receive this award from DHS and FEMA. It is very gratifying to know that our work not only meets, but exceeds, what our clients need to manage their IT security programs.” said K2Share Senior Security Analyst Karen Urban.

"This is a great achievement for the K2Share Security Team," said David Hinds, K2Share's Federal Program Manager. "The security community is a very dedicated one and recognition of our team positions K2Share in the marketplace as a contractor that goes above and beyond its client's expectations."
