K2Share Security Team Members Awarded 1st and 2nd Runner-up DHS ISSO of the Year

8 November 2010

K2Share Security Team Information Systems Security Officers (ISSO) Brian George and Kelli Campbell were awarded 1st and 2nd Runner-Up, respectively, for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) ISSO of the Year by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). They were presented with their awards by FEMA Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) Elisa R. Cruz in the Transportation Security Administration’s (TSA) Town Hall Conference Room, November 8, 2010. Mr. George was nominated by Ms. Cruz and her staff at the FEMA IT Security Branch for his work with Office of the Chief Financial Officer (OCFO) systems and Ms. Campbell was nominated by the FEMA Office of External Affairs, with input from the Integrated Public Alerting Warning System (IPAWS) Program.

“For our clients, IT Security has become an integral component that interacts with all aspects of a system lifecycle,” said K2Share Associate Systems Security Analyst Brian George. “We strive to understand the nature of our client's systems and provide security services that not only meet but exceed their needs. To be recognized by FEMA and DHS for our efforts to improve the security of IT systems within their environments is truly a great honor.”

The ISSO of the Year program was created in 2004 by DHS CISO Bob West to recognize outstanding security professionals from each DHS Component and an overall top ISSO. The program recognizes the ISSOs whose efforts and contributions are acknowledged as being notable and distinguished. The ISSO of the Year is required to consistently perform well beyond normal job requirements and have demonstrated loyalty, outstanding performance, commitment, dedication, and innovation in implementing IT security throughout their Component. Component-level winners receive a Runner-Up Award, and the overall ISSO winner receives the Eagle Award. Nominees include both Federal service and support contractors that work for DHS Components. DHS Components include: the Directorate for National Protection and Programs, the Directorate for Science and Technology, the Directorate for Management, the Office of Policy, the Office of Health Affairs, the Office of Intelligence and Analysis, the Office of Operations Coordination and Planning, the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center, the Domestic Nuclear Detection Office, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP), the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services, United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the United States Coast Guard, FEMA, and the United States Secret Service. For the 92 systems of the FEMA Component, of which Mr. George and Ms. Campbell are a part, there are approximately 140 ISSOs.

“As Information System Security Officers, it is our responsibility to evaluate, maintain, and communicate the security needs for the programs we support. Given the depth of experience and expertise for professionals within the ISSO community, it is a great honor to be nominated by our clients and to receive this award from DHS and FEMA. This award is a testament to not simply meeting but exceeding client expectations, which we strive to do on a daily basis,” said K2Share Senior Systems Security Analyst Kelli Campbell.

“This is a fine example of the quality of work that K2Share values, and we're extremely proud of Kelli and Brian's achievement,“ said Darrin Todd, K2Share’s Director of IA & Professional Engineering Services. “K2share continues to strive for excellence, and we're always elated when we find that our customers are pleased with the quality of our information security products.”
